“Under New Management” campaign drives critical turnaround for cult horror roguelike from SWERY and SUDA51

Hotel Barcelona, the cult-favorite action horror roguelike from Hidetaka Suehiro, SWERY, and Goichi Suda, SUDA51, has officially moved from “Mixed” to “Positive” user reviews on Steam, marking a major turnaround following its comprehensive “Under New Management” relaunch.

To thank players for supporting the comeback, Hotel Barcelona is also adding a new set of free collaboration skins, celebrating a line-up of cult games and creators that sit perfectly alongside its strange, stylish and horror-infused identity.

The milestone comes after a sustained multi-week campaign combining deep gameplay overhaul, repositioning and global marketing execution, transforming player sentiment and restoring momentum behind one of the industry’s most distinctive titles.

A

Relaunch That Rewrote the Narrative

Originally released under challenging circumstances, Hotel Barcelona faced early technical issues, unclear positioning and the collapse of its original publisher, leaving the title without support during its critical launch window.

In response, developer White Owls Inc. undertook what SWERY described as a “complete structural refinement of the player experience,” rebuilding core systems across gameplay, progression and user experience.

This relaunch was brought to market by publisher Dark Product, working alongside marketing and communications partner Goldpact Goblins, under the unified campaign:

HOTEL BARCELONA: Under New Management

From Mixed to Positive: A Hard-Fought Turnaround

The transition to a Positive rating reflects:

·      Sustained 90%+ recent review sentiment

·      Significant improvements across gameplay balance, UX and performance

·      Renewed community engagement and visibility

·      A coordinated global campaign spanning creators, media and platforms

·      A player base that gave the hotel a second chance

·      Free Collaboration Skins Added as a Thank You to Players

As part of the celebration, Hotel Barcelona is adding free collaboration skins in partnership with the following game titles:

Shadows of the DamnedBye Sweet CaroleDeath Game HotelThe Good Life

The collaborations bring together a collection of games that share Hotel Barcelona’s love of the strange, the cinematic, the cult and the uncompromising.

Shadows of the Damned connects Hotel Barcelona back to the wild creative lineage of SUDA51: a punk-horror action cult classic full of demons, attitude and absurdity. Its inclusion feels like a natural tribute to the kind of bold, rule-breaking game design that helped shape Hotel Barcelona in the first place.

Bye Sweet Carole adds a completely different flavor of horror: gothic, animated, elegant and unsettling. Its presence highlights the broader horror family surrounding Hotel Barcelona, not just slashers and bloodshed, but mood, fairy-tale darkness and visual identity.

Death Game Hotel brings another layer of deadly competition and surreal survival, making it a perfect tonal match for Hotel Barcelona’s own twisted hotel setting, competitive tension and death-game energy.

The Good Life, created by SWERY and White Owls, connects directly to the studio’s own creative universe: eccentric characters, small-town strangeness, mystery and a style of storytelling that could only come from SWERY.

Together, the skins are both a thank you to the players who helped Hotel Barcelona turn the corner and a celebration of the wider family of cult games that continue to keep strange, creator-led experiences alive.

A Cult Vision Reclaimed

Described by SWERY as “one of my magnum opuses,” Hotel Barcelona blends slasher horror, roguelike progression and competitive survival mechanics into a deliberately unconventional experience.

That vision, once obscured by launch conditions, has now been rediscovered by players:

A “love-it-or-hate-it” cult design philosophyA unique fusion of Deadly Premonition-style storytelling and modern roguelike systemsA bold creative collaboration between two of Japan’s most iconic game creatorsA horror roguelike identity that becomes stronger the deeper players go

What the Steam Reviews Say

  1. CS1 — "The work put into Under New Management can't be understated. In a sea of games where developers are happy to just leave their work broken and abandoned, it's clear that the team at White Owls really wanted to make something good and refused to stop until they'd addressed all the initial issues."https://steamcommunity.com/id/CStheFirst/recommended/2286600/

  2. catsn — "I thought it'll be abandoned... I can very happily say this is not the case... Now it's finally a fun and very satisfying slashy slashy game." (24 helpful votes — the most-upvoted update-redemption review, and the dev reply on it, "White Owls are persistent creatures with infinite patience," is itself quotable.)https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561199684361094/recommended/2286600/

To celebrate the shift to Positive, SWERY65 is seen eating a well-deserved ice cream in a new Lynch-style video trailer designed and created by award-winning filmmaker and artist Andrés Montero Bustamante.

The surreal new trailer acts as the evil twin to the pre-release video of SUDA51 eating a burger: a strange, funny, unsettling and unmistakably Hotel Barcelona way to mark the game’s recovery.
