A decisive gameplay evolution for the horror roguelite created by Hidetaka “Swery65” Suehiro × Goichi “Suda51” Suda.
Today, we officially announce Hotel Barcelona: Under New Management.
This update represents a large-scale overhaul of core gameplay systems in Hotel Barcelona, including responsiveness, combat flow, and balance adjustments to the multiplayer Invasion mode. In addition, five free crossover skins will be distributed to all players. Combined with the game’s growing recognition at international awards, this update is expected to bring renewed global attention to the title.
This is not a routine patch.It is a fundamental re-evaluation and refinement of the player experience.
Movement speed has been increased, post-attack recovery frames have been shortened, parrying has been redesigned into a more meaningful and rewarding mechanic, and dodging now allows players to create proper space in combat. Enemy reaction windows have been adjusted, multiplayer fairness has been improved, and the early game experience has been clarified. Overall control responsiveness and combat rhythm have been significantly enhanced.
Returning players will feel the difference immediately upon launching the game. For first-time players, Hotel Barcelona now reflects the creators’ intended vision in its fully realized form.
New Features in This Update
Combat, Flow, and Responsiveness
Reduced post-attack recovery frames. Expanded cancel windows into jump, dodge, guard, and follow-up attacks for immediate action transitions.
Reduced stamina-related stress and shortened attack animations to create a more aggressive combat rhythm.
Increased base dodge distance and rebalanced dodge-related skills for reliable evasive movement.
Fully redesigned parry system. Parry now triggers via Just Guard timing, and successful parries reward players with HP recovery orbs.
Guarding now consumes stamina, adding meaningful defensive decision-making.
Added multiple new parry-related skills to the skill tree and restructured skill placement and progression flow.
Added new skill “Enhancement Luck+” to improve weapon upgrade accessibility.
Expanded existing ranged skills to allow increased ammunition capacity.
Rebalanced multiple weapons, including flamethrower armor damage adjustments.
Players now start with both the Axe and Chainsaw equipped from the beginning of the game.
Revised wall-cling and triangle jump controls for more intuitive platforming.
Difficulty names changed to “Newcomer,” “Veteran,” “Professional,” and “Slasher.” Base difficulty reset to “Newcomer” with full balance adjustments across tiers.
On Veteran and below, Slasher Phantom will no longer disappear even if players take a different route than in previous runs.
Added a screen at stage clear (or retreat) to confirm Slasher Phantom progression status.
Enemy and Stage Rebalancing
Adjusted HP, attack range, and reaction timing for multiple enemy types.
Rebalanced durability and behavior for bosses Jacob, Nigel, and Eve.
Modified boss “Persistence Value” so it only activates after the first defeat.
Improved stage terrain, camera distance, and door placement in key stages.
Refreshed BONUS stage layouts with increased rewards, coins, and treasure chest availability.
Invasion Multiplayer Improvements
Reduced imbalance caused by player progression differences.
Improved parry reaction interactions between players.
Doppelgängers can no longer invade during boss battles.
Doppelgängers no longer interfere with enemies or environmental gimmicks.
Improved matchmaking and multiplayer UI.
Quality of Life and Performance
Optimized overall game performance.
Added DUALSHOCK controller support.
Refreshed HUD layout to improve clarity and visibility of essential information.
Improved prologue tutorial, layout, and UI.
Added automatic dialogue playback function.
Numerous fixes across UI, localization, boss encounters, journal, animations, and achievements.
Adjusted Slasher Phantom visual effects to improve player visibility during combat.
Additional Adjustments
Added new dialogue lines to Monica’s scenario regarding her sister.
Updated the title screen.
Five New Playable Skins (Free for All Users)
Faye from Demonschool — A cult indie crossover character appearing within the nightmare hotel.
Alex from Slitterhead — A horror-tinged guest skin with a striking combat silhouette.
Julie from Slitterhead — A second Slitterhead crossover, featuring a red hoodie and mask for a bold protagonist look.
Pinky☆ from Promise Mascot Agency — A surreal mascot thrown into a violent horror world, creating intense tonal contrast.
Michi from Promise Mascot Agency — Joining alongside Pinky☆. Wield the shovel (axe) for full crossover immersion.
All skins are available free to all users.
Award Momentum
The creativity and execution of Hotel Barcelona have received strong international recognition.
At the 2025 NYX Game Awards, the title won nine awards, including three Grand Winner awards and six Gold awards across categories including Indie Innovation, Character Design, Music, Brand Identity, and Key Art.
The game is currently nominated at the NAVGTR Awards in the categories of Original Score, New IP, and Performance, with winners to be announced on March 11.
It was also selected as a finalist for Game of the Year at the SAGA Awards.
Additionally, the game has been nominated for the PlayStation Indies Users’ Choice Award at the PlayStation Partner Awards Japan Asia, and was selected for the Visual Excellence Award at BitSummit.

About the Game
Hotel Barcelona is a 2.5D action horror roguelite inspired by slasher cinema, serial killer mythology, and the surreal logic of dreams.
Players control U.S. Marshal Justine Bernstein, whose mind is inhabited by the spirit of a serial killer known as Dr. Carnival. With his power, she must fight through ever-shifting hotel floors dominated by deadly traps and monstrous killers.
Players’ failed runs return as armed “Slasher Phantoms” — empowered echoes that fight alongside the player in subsequent runs.
The game combines tense melee combat, looping roguelite progression, and a unique Invasion multiplayer mode where other players can suddenly enter your game as hostile Doppelgängers.

Hidetaka “SWERY” Suehiro, founder of White Owls Inc., directs and writes Hotel Barcelona. Known for Deadly Premonition and The MISSING – J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories, SWERY is recognized for surreal tone, unforgettable characters, and unconventional narrative structures.
Goichi “SUDA51” Suda, founder of Grasshopper Manufacture, is the legendary creator behind No More Heroes and Killer7. His bold stylistic identity, genre fusion, and striking visual design heavily influence Hotel Barcelona.
